Peppered Jack Burgers

Ingredients

2lb.  ground beef chuck 
1/3cup  finely chopped onion 
1tbsp.  chili powder 
1 1/2tsp.  ground cumin 
3/4tsp.  chopped fresh oregano 
3/4tsp.  garlic pepper 
3/4tsp.  salt (optional) 
6slices peppered Jack cheese (about 4 oz.) 
6 hamburger buns 

Directions

Heat grill to medium direct heat. Meanwhile, crumble meat into medium bowl. Sprinkle with onion, chili powder, cumin, oregano, garlic pepper and salt, if desired; toss lightly with 2 forks to mix well. Shape into 6 patties, each 3/4 inch thick.
Place burgers on grill. Grill, covered, 5 to 7 minutes per side or until done (160°F). Top each burger with a slice of cheese, if desired, and place buns, cut side down, on grill during last 1 to 2 minutes of cooking.
Serve hot burgers in buns.
