Braised Pork Tacos

Ingredients

1tbsp.  canola oil
1small onion, chopped
5cloves garlic, minced
2lb.  pork shoulder, cut into 1-inch pieces
1tsp.  chili powder, or more to taste
1tsp.  salt
1tsp.  anise seeds or star anise
1tsp.  cumin seeds
1tsp.  dried oregano
1/2tsp.  ground cinnamon

Directions

  1. Heat oil in heavy 3-quart saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat; add onion and sauté until wilted. Add garlic, pork, chili powder and salt; stir well. Add 1 cup warm water; bring to boiling and reduce heat to low.
  2. Meanwhile, in small sauté pan over medium heat, heat spices until fragrant. Grind in spice mill or dry blender container to make into powder.
  3. Sprinkle spice powder over pork mixture; stir well. Cook over low heat, loosely covered, until pork is fork tender, about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours. Increase heat to medium-high; continue cooking and stirring until remaining liquid evaporates and pork cubes are brown.
