Car Packing Tips

Can’t wait to get back on the road again this summer? Try out these quick car-packing tips designed for maximum convenience and minimum hassle. Wherever your destination takes you, use these sure-fire tips to stay safe and stress free so you can sit back and enjoy the ride!

Plan and Pack

Make a List — and Check It Twice: The first step in proper packing is to know what you need to bring. Pay special attention to unusual items that are easy to forget or leave behind, such as prescription medications.

Space Sense: Determine the amount of available space, then plan accordingly. There is a big difference between traveling cross-country in a compact car versus a mini-van. Calculate the comfort level based upon number of passengers, available space and duration of the trip.

Clear and Clean: Clear away all unnecessary items from the trunk, dashboard and other areas of the vehicle in preparation for the trip. A quick drive to the carwash is a good time to have the interior vacuumed and cleaned. Also, have a mechanic take one last look to make sure the vehicle is in good working order.

Don’t Delay: The best time to begin packing the car is the night before you intend to begin the journey. Morning preparation always takes a little longer than expected, so start the trip stress-free by allowing extra time to dress, have breakfast and lock the house.

Keep in Reach

Carry a Cooler: Quick access to food and drinks helps you avoid unnecessary stops and helps reduce the cost of the trip. A variety of fresh fruit, bottled water and a few sweet treats stave off hunger without making a mess.

Movies and Music: Children and adults will enjoy a little diversion during long trips. Portable DVD players make it easier than ever to enjoy your favorite music or movies without disrupting everyone in the car.

Clean and Tidy: Reduce stress and mess by keeping the car clean and tidy with the use of disinfectant hand wipes, tissues and easy-to-empty wastebaskets. Make it a habit to toss the trash at each rest stop and replenish any needed supplies.

Comfort Companions: Travel pillows, light throws and neck pillows can help keep everyone comfortable throughout the trip. It is easier to toss a small blanket over a chilly child than allow everyone to swelter in the summer heat by turning the AC down. Keep cool and comfortable throughout the trip.

Treasure Chest: When traveling with kids it is a good idea to provide a treasure chest for each child to store souvenirs, books, games and other personal items. Not only does it reduce friction by establishing personal space, a treasure chest keeps kids entertained and the car clutter-free.

Grab and Go

Camera and Camcorder: Keep a camera or camcorder on-hand to capture those quick roadside shots of inspiring scenery and spur-of-the-moment cameos of the kids.

Change of Clothes: Keep a change of clothes close by in case of accidental spills and temperature changes.

Feel Fresh Kit: Carry a disposable toothbrush, breath mints, hairbrush and other essential hygiene items in an easy-to-reach area to freshen up after lunch or during a rest stop. It’s easier than trying to sort through the luggage and allows everyone to look (and feel) presentable for dinner after a long day of travel.

Petty Cash: Keep a supply of small bills and coins within easy reach for toll roads, vending machines and other incidental costs.

Stow and Tow

Begin Big: When packing your vehicle, it is a good idea to start with the largest items first. Make sure each item is secure and placed in a steady position without crushing or squeezing the item. Once large items like luggage or big boxes are in place, fill in the spaces with smaller items being sure to secure each level as you progress.

Back to Front: Begin at the back of the vehicle then move forward as you fill the spaces. Be careful to leave enough space to maneuver. Place items you need last in the back while keeping those used more frequently toward the front.

Essential Extras

Finally, don’t forget a few essential extras such as a spare set of keys, a first aid kit, prescription medication and emergency phone contacts. Place these in an easy-to-locate area such as the glove compartment or other protected place.
